ABOUT THE PARTNER
WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by:
- conserving the world’s biological diversity
- ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable
- promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
WWF Peru is currently implementing the “Live Amazon – Conservation and Participatory Assessment of the forest and environmental services” project. This projects main goal is to strengthen governance mechanisms and political frameworks that acknowledge the value of all goods and services that come from existing forests, benefiting local communities and reducing deforestation and woodlands degradation in the amazon region of Colombia and Peru.
The specific goal is to reduce deforestation and loss of biodiversity, maintaining the extension of woodlands in at least 800,000 hectares in the Amazon: Colombia (Tarapaca, Amazon region) and Peru (Atalaya, Ucayali region; and Iñapari, Madre de Dios region).
The target groups are: governmental bodies in Colombia and Peru operating at the national, regional and local levels: community groups and indigenous associations, identified by the proposal. Final beneficiaries are 18 communities from three indigenous communities in Peru and two indigenous communities in Colombia, as well as colonizer communities in the area. This project benefits three indigenous groups in Peru: Ashaninca, Asheninka and Ese-eja, covering approximately 400,000 hectares of tropical forests.
THE VOLUNTEER’S ROLE
The volunteer will coordinate the plans, projects and strategies outlined in the “Live Amazon – Conservation and Participatory Assessment of the forest and environmental services” project in Atalaya. The volunteer will be responsible for follow-up with the local governments, as well as for the monitoring and assessment of the commercial activities and workshops to be carried out in relation to the project.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential qualifications for this volunteer placement:
- University degree with specialization in natural resources, forest management, economic and social assessment, livelihoods, or a relevant field
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience in project management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Excellent communication skills
- Intermediate Spanish – Level 3
TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:
- Attendance at a CUSO-VSO assessment day (candidates are expected to cover the first $150 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs).
- Travel and accommodation costs associated with five day pre-departure training course held in Ottawa.
- Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency).
- Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and health insurance.
- Accommodation while overseas.
- A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed.
- Quarterly payments to support you in your placement
